How Do I Choose A Paint Contractor
Posted under News on Sunday, March 7
This can be the most important question to ask yourself when trying to decide how to get the best paint job for the amount you are willing to spend. Having been in the business for 20 years now, I can offer the following suggestions:
1. Dont always go with the recommendation of the guy behind the paint counter. They are in the business of selling paint and will many times recommend the contractor(s) who purchase the most from them.
2. Look for the knowledgable painter, ask questions. How do you measure the amount of paint you put on?(The paint is measured in millage readings) If the painter does not know how much they are putting on, how do they know its correct? Do they have a guage for measuring it?
3. Do you have referrals? Not from the house you painted a year ago, but the home you painted 7 years ago. All homes look good for the first few years, but time is the true test. If you hire someone who has been painting for a shorter period of time, you are not getting the benefit of the proven paint test.
4. Is the painter a professional or a salesman for a paint contracting company? Does the person giving you the bid paint or offer daily supervision? Are the crew personal seasonal painters or year round professionals? Many contractors paint homes for a living and because they care about what they do. Some are in it to find the “pot of gold”.
The choice you make can be the difference between repainting in 5 years or 10 years. Take the time to get the bids from several contractors, ask questions and look for the true professional. Make the informed choice!
